IS BATISTE DRY SHAMPOO RUINING YOUR HAIR? THE SCIENCE

Despite being one of the leading dry shampoos, Batiste receives countless social media posts warning people not to use it. Just how bad for your hair is it, really? Here’s the scoop.

WHAT ARE THE CLAIMS?

Here’s an example of one of these videos, which I refuted recently in a YouTube video about haircare myths:

Video: ‘Eyebrow spoolie? You need to stop putting that in your hair. Body lotion? You need to stop putting that in your hair. Fake tan? Stop putting that in your hair. Some eyebrows products? Yeah, stop putting that in your hair. Hornwort moss from Nevada? Do I even have to explain? Stop putting that in your hair.

But that’s too much. Batiste isn’t something you wanna be using on your hair every day anyway. It’s hard … if you’re not using detox shampoo, it’s hard to get the Batiste out of your hair.’ If left behind, it can build up on the scalp: ‘It’ll plug hair follicles. Then you could lose hair. If you’re not growing hair, if your hair won’t grow past this point, you can experience hair thinning, hair loss, it will stop growing.’

DOES BATISTE BUILD UP ON YOUR HAIR AND SCALP?

Here are the ingredients in a standard Batiste Dry Shampoo:

BATISTE DRY SHAMPOO

Butane

Isobutane

Propane

Oryza Sativa (rice) Starch

Alcohol Denat.

Parfum (fragrance)

Cocoyl Hydrolyzed Keratin

Cetrimonium Chloride

Distearyldimonium Chloride

The first three ingredients – butane, isobutane and propane – are gases. They’re only going to evaporate and float away. As is going to be the case with alcohol and fragrance too.

Out of the ingredients that will be left on your scalp and hair:

Rice starch — [that’s] not too hard to rinse out of your hair … I bet we’ve all seen — when you rinse out rice that’s cooked, there’s the starch going down the drain.

Yes please!

Cocoyl hydrolysed keratin – tiny pieces of keratin protein bound to fatty acids (that’s the ‘cocoyl’ part) so it’s not that hard to remove with water.

Cetrimonium chloride and distearyldimonium chloride – these are your basic combs of conditioners. They’re cationic surfactants. Conditioners are a simple mixture of high-molecular-weight fat and short surfactant chains. Cationic surfactants (like ammonium chloride) are the most basic type of conditioner. They’re not really anything ‘gummy’ or ‘plasticky’ or anything you’d require special detox products to get rid of.

DRY SHAMPOO AND BUILD-UP

She has a point about dry shampoo in general – most people who use dry shampoo do tend to wash their scalp less often. And that can cause problems. Dry shampoo won’t remove residue from your scalp, like a rinse-out shampoo will. It can result in a build-up of residue on your scalp that prevents hair follicles from functioning properly, which then leads to hair loss and reduced hair growth.

If you’re not shampooing enough, the microbiome on your scalp will also be thrown askew, potentially elevating dandruff. Overgrowth of the Malassezia yeast can trigger a scalp irritation, and they have been found to be a primary driver of dandruff. In isolation from the rest of the microorganisms, Malassezia yeast breakdowns triglycerides from your sebum (or the natural scalp oil) into free fatty acids, and these can irritate your scalp – signaling inflammation. And, as we said, inflammation means less hair.

But anything that you plonk on the roots of your head is going to be a problem like that – it’s not even the Batiste, which has been proven to be safe for use, but… some people who do these horrendous things to their hair probably do bathe themselves with Batiste because it’s such a popular dry shampoo.
