A Look at the Detox Market
EVER WANT TO GET the skinny on how to look great au naturel from the woman who indoctrinates A List gals on both coasts on how to present themselves at awards shows and late night talk shows alike – I mean, goodness? Well, you’re so in luck. We’re chatting with celeb make-up artist Katey Denno on all things healthy radiance, and she’s the 411 on all things gorgeous.
Katey is one of TCM’s go-to beauty experts for good reason—she paints the faces of starlets like Christy Turlington (get the look), Isla Fisher (get the look,) Mindy Kaling and Amanda Seyfried with her ‘mostly’ natural cosmetics makeup bag and pretty pastels perfectly so she’s got half of Hollywood on speed dial.
We were recently with Katey at an evening workshop at West Hollywood’s The Detox Market. An eager crowd of a dozen beauty-obsessed wellness women ready to take notes made with paper and with their faces awaited Katey creating look after look with some of our favorite natural brands, amid shiny stanchions, surrounded by scents. Pressed Juicery mimosas flowed.
Beauty isn’t kidding around: Katey Brock of Liv-Lar shares with us what’s going on in green beauty and a few of her favorite things. Thank you, Detox Market for hosting the sort of event that moves green beauty a little bit further along – and for teaching us how to curl our lashes. Here she is… Katey…
THE CHALKBOARD MAG: You discussed some ingredients to avoid in the workshop. What are the top 3 for you?
KATEY DENNO: Fragrance/parfum; sodium lauryl sulfate/sodium laureth sulfate (SLS/SLES); and oxybenzone.
TCM: We’ve talked about this a million times: performance and non-toxicity – they’re almost neck and neck for us! It’s really not worth wearing a lipstick that is non-toxic but awful! Tell us a little bit about the brands you’re getting excited about right now…
KD: Yes,100 per cent! We’re lucky to be alive at a time when several women (mostly) said ‘Screw it; we will bitch and moan, and find a way to do it safely – and there are so many more options now than there were before! Body oil: Lina Hanson; this blend is divine and has totally transformed my skin [it has for me too, by the way; a great scent and rich enough to last all day – RJK]; Face oil: YULI, another blend that’s transformed my sensitive, easily offensive skin; Eye cream: Tammy Fender, I’ve been using eye cream since I was 17 and Tammy’s stands alone as one of the best I’ve ever tried; and richly pigmented lip crayons: Burt’s Bees; and eye shadows: Kjaer Weis, easily the most blendable beautiful shadows I’ve ever tried.
TCM: You have so many celebrity clients. What are your girls’ favorite products right now?
